“Shaking Things Up: 14 Young Women Who Changed the World” by Susan Hood and illustrated by Sophie Blackall, Emily Winfield Martin, Shadra Strickland, Melissa Sweet, LeUyen Pham, Oge Mora, Julie Morstad, Lisa Brown, Selina Alko, Isabel Roxas, Sara Palacios – This inspiring children’s book by Susan Hood features the story of Ruby Bridges and Mae Jemison.
“Malala’s Magic Pencil” by Malala Yousafzai and illustrated by Kerascoe – Malala Yousafzai tells her story of seeing a world that needed to change, and wishing for a magic pencil to change it. When education is taken from girls, and tragedy finds her, she discovers a different kind of magic.
“Josephine: The Dazzling Life of Josephine Baker” by Patricia Hruby Powell and illustrated by Christian Robinson – This picture book teaches kids about Josephine Baker, an African-American singer, dancer, and Civil Rights activist.
“Little Leaders: Bold Women in Black History” by Vashti Harrison – This children’s books honors the life and legacy of forty bold women in history!
