In honor of National Poetry Month, we will be sharing information about our favorite poets!
This week, we celebrate the life and legacy of Langston Hughes.
Langston Hughes was the central figure of the Harlem Renaissance, and his work has inspired generations of Black poets. Hughes also wrote novels, short stories, essays, and plays. He sought to honestly portray the joys and hardships of working-class Black lives, avoiding both sentimental idealization and negative stereotypes.
Here’s one of our favorite poems:
Dreams
Hold fast to dreams
For if dreams die
Life is a broken-winged bird
That cannot fly.
Hold fast to dreams
For when dreams go
Life is a barren field
Frozen with snow.
