Chief Operating Officer
Barbershop Books is seeking a strategic and collaborative Chief Operating Officer (COO) to help lead the organization through its next phase of growth and impact. Reporting to the Executive Director, the COO will oversee day-to-day operations, strengthen financial systems, and help foster a high-performing, inclusive team culture. This virtual role supports a distributed team with staff in New York City and Philadelphia. The ideal candidate is an experienced nonprofit leader with a systems mindset, a strong commitment to equity, and a passion for advancing Barbershop Books’ mission to inspire Black boys and other vulnerable children to read for fun.
Lead Certified Educator – Reading So Lit Summer
Barbershop Books is seeking a Lead Certified Educator to support and guide instructional staff for its Reading So Lit Summer program—a virtual two-week literacy experience for boys of color ages 6–8, led by high school-aged male Youth Instructors. The Lead Certified Educator will develop and lead pre-program training sessions, mentor Certified Educators, and facilitate weekly debriefs throughout the program. This role requires strong leadership, instructional coaching experience, and a passion for early childhood literacy.
Certified Educator – Reading So Lit Summer
Barbershop Books is seeking Certified Educators to support our 2025 Reading So Lit Summer program—a fun, two-week virtual reading experience for Black and Brown boys ages 6–8. Certified Educators are experienced, state-certified teachers who will coach and mentor high school-aged Youth Instructors as they lead engaging literacy activities. This part-time, virtual role includes leading training sessions, providing feedback, supporting lesson prep, and helping ensure a positive experience for youth leaders and participants. Ideal candidates have 3+ years of teaching experience, strong communication skills, and a passion for mentorship and early literacy.
Youth Instructor – Reading So Lit Summer
Barbershop Books is seeking male high school students of color (ages 16–18) to serve as Youth Instructors for our Reading So Lit Summer program—a fun, virtual reading experience for boys ages 6–8. Youth Instructors will lead interactive literacy lessons, serve as role models, and help young boys build confidence and a love for reading. Under the guidance of a NYS Certified Educator, Youth Instructors will also gain valuable experience in teaching, early childhood literacy, and leadership while participating in weekly training and professional development workshops throughout July.
