Dear Barbershop Books family,
First and foremost, we hope you and your loved ones are safe and healthy. We want you to know that Barbershop Books is actively exploring ways to support families and communities in creating positive reading experiences for children at home.
Barbershop Books is closely monitoring COVID-19 developments and recommendations from local, state and national officials. We have suspended all in-person meetings organization-wide: This includes the suspension of barber trainings and barbershop visits by our community liaisons.
Barbershop Books’ mission to help young Black boys identify as readers is more important than ever before. With schools and libraries closed, many children lack access to essential academic support and resources. Without culturally relevant, age-appropriate, and fun reading experiences right now, many Black boys will fall further behind in reading. We are committed to helping families and communities inspire children to read during this difficult time.
Here’s how Barbershop Books continues to address the needs of young learners across the country:
Raise funds to continue paying our staff, create new digital content, and support the long-term sustainability of the organization;
Share free online educational resources, original content, and practical tips for parents;
Partnering with local organizations to improve children’s access to digital and print resources;
Ongoing communication with community partners, barbershop owners and barbers.
