At Barbershop Books, we believe every child should see themselves in the stories they read. That’s why our Reading So Lit® platform introduces Darius, Mateo, April, and Yen—diverse and relatable characters who make reading a fun, meaningful, and personal experience for PK-5 learners. This innovative platform goes beyond traditional reading programs, helping kids discover their unique preferences and develop a reading identity that turns literacy into a source of joy and empowerment. Let’s meet the characters who bring this journey to life!
Darius
Whether he’s collecting bugs, leaves, or seeds, Darius’s curiosity about the natural world fuels his love for science and adventure. With shelves full of books about trees, space, and the weather, Darius invites his friends to join him on new reading adventures every time they visit. Living in Harlem, Darius shows kids how their surroundings can inspire endless discoveries and how reading can unlock the secrets of the world around them.
Mateo
Mateo has a passion for machines, cars, and all things mechanical. When he’s not reading about how things work, he’s taking apart his granddad’s old radio or tinkering with tools to build something new. With books about trucks, boats, and engines filling his room, Mateo proves that reading isn’t just about stories—it’s about exploring how things are made and dreaming of new possibilities.
April
April is all about health, science, and big dreams. She spends her time reading books about the human body and how to stay healthy. Her entrepreneurial spirit led her to sell healthy cookies in her neighborhood just to buy a personalized white lab coat! When her friends visit, they know they’ll be playing “doctor” on repeat. April’s passion inspires young readers to imagine careers in medicine and explore how science can make a difference.
Yen
Yen’s love for food and spices knows no bounds. From growing ingredients in her tiny kitchen garden to experimenting with recipes from her favorite cookbooks, she’s always cooking up something new. Her best friend April is her biggest taste-tester, and Yen’s knack for sharing her snacks means there’s never a dull moment when she’s around. Yen encourages kids to explore their creativity and learn about cultures through the world of food.
Why These Characters Matter
The Reading So Lit characters reflect the diversity and individuality of young readers, showing that there’s no one way to love reading. From April’s focus on health to Mateo’s fascination with machines, these characters demonstrate that every child’s interests are worth celebrating. They also embody the platform’s mission: to make reading fun, meaningful, and personal for every child, no matter their background.
By introducing relatable characters and creating tools that center on students’ strengths, Reading So Lit transforms literacy education for the better. Together, we’re building a future where children can proudly say, “I’m a reader!”
