Do you remember the book that inspired you to pursue your dreams, perhaps a story that ignited your imagination or a character who resonated with your own experiences? Books are powerful tools that have the ability to shape our perspectives, and as such, it’s crucial to ensure they reflect the diversity of our world. However, according to a study conducted by the Cooperative Children’s Book Center in 2020, only 29% of children’s books featured characters of color. As the calls for more inclusive narratives grow louder, it’s evident that the need for diverse children’s books has never been greater.

Since its inception in 2020, the Barbershop Books E-Library has served as a virtual sanctuary for young readers. It offers children of all ages free and unlimited access to over 70 diverse and engaging books, written by Black and Brown independent authors. Collaborating with independent authors gives young readers access to new narratives and diverse perspectives and is essential to fostering a love of reading in children. Today we are excited to announce that we have joined forces with Ad Astra Media to provide children with access to five new S.T.E.A.M (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Math) books in the E-Library.

Planting Seeds with Ad Astra Media
Founded in 2019 by Dr. Jose Morey, Ad Astra Media is an innovative, minority-owned educational production studio dedicated to creating engaging S.T.E.A.M. content for children. Dr. Morey’s vision stemmed from recognizing the lack of diversity in educational materials, particularly in underserved communities. With a commitment to equitable education, Ad Astra Media offers a range of resources, from children’s book series to virtual reality experiences, designed to inspire the next generation of innovators.

Launching in the Barbershop Books E-Library on Friday, March 8th are five new books that young readers can explore and engage with. These new additions will provide young readers with access to a diverse range of stories that explore the infinite possibilities of the different S.T.E.A.M. fields. This collaboration further represents our mission of helping children identify as readers through diverse storytelling and reading role models.

Here are the five captivating S.T.E.A.M. books are available in the E-Library:
